Stars rise and fall, Realms flourish and perish, and Lands and Interspaces drift between different anchors. After the Ripple of Life, the earliest life evolved in isolation across separate worlds over immense spans of time, diverging into a multitude of races. At some later stage of cosmic history, many already existing lineages of life underwent a new cognitive transition almost simultaneously. Modern cosmology calls this change the “Ripple of Intelligence”: through it, some forms of life gained the capacity to actively comprehend, question, choose, and accumulate abstract experience. No consensus has yet been reached on the mechanism behind the Ripple of Intelligence; explanations involving changes in early rules, complex living structures reaching a critical state, and echoes of difference have long coexisted. When the first intelligent life appeared, no Great Being had yet been born.

Many ancient civilizations called intelligence the “fire of difference.” This name is not a concept in modern biology, but a widely circulated philosophical metaphor: worlds can exist and rules can cycle, but only intelligent life asks why, rejects established answers, and consciously creates new states. From this arose an ancient proposition: “Difference creates the universe, and intelligence perpetuates difference.”

Some later schools of thought divided difference into the levels of worlds, civilizations, and living beings to explain how intelligence continues to transform natural differences into historical ones. Stars, Realms, Lands, and Interspaces differ in structure; civilizations differ in their paths, beliefs, and histories; and even within the same family and bloodline, individual choices never coincide completely.
